LTTE attack on defences in Kirmichchi, Kadjuwatta thwarted
[Thursday, November 23, 2006 - 10.00 GMT]

An attempt by the LTTE this morning to attack the defences at Kirmichchi and Kadjuwatte areas was thwarted by the Security Forces forcing the LTTE to withdraw. Seven soldiers had suffered minor injuries during this morning's attack.

Currently there is intermittent fighting happening between Kadjuwatta and Vakarai says a source at the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS). With the assistance of the Air Force the attack was thwarted by about 9.30 this morning.

According to the MCNS during the course of yesterday (22) LTTE cadres had moved their 122 mm Mortar, 81 mm Mortars and Heavy Machine Guns, forward to launch this offensive. The MCNS says the attack was planned to coincide with the 'maaveer week', which ends November 27.

Meanwhile the Air Force jets this morning carried out air strikes on identified sea tiger bases north of Mullattivu. The MCNS says the air strikes were launched following confirmation by Air Force Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that these were sea tiger bases, which have the capacity to launch attacks on naval patrols in the area.
