Chairman and three members invited to Human Rights probe commission

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 3rd November, 2006 announced the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate and inquire into alleged serious violations of human rights.

In terms of the Presidential Warrant, a group of persons of international repute constituting International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP) has to be appointed to ensure transparency of investigations and inquiries of the said Commission.  

Accordingly, on the directions of the President and the agreement of the individual members to serve on the IIGEP, four persons of eminence were today invited to serve as members of the IIGEP.

Justice P N Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of India was invited today to serve as the Chairman of this IIGEP.

In addition, the following persons have been invited to serve on the Committee.

1.  Dr. Kamal Hossain - nominee of United Nations High Commission for Human
Rights

2. Mr. Marzuki Darusman - Chairperson/National Human Rights Commission of Indonesia, nominated by International Parliamentary Union
 
3. Prof Yozo Yokota - Chuo University, Tokyo, Japan, nominated by the Government of Japan

Letters of invitations will be sent to the other members of the IIGEP no sooner nominations are received from respective countries.
