Media Release
[Friday, December 01, 2006 - 10.30 GMT]

Two persons were killed and ten others, including services personnel and civilians, have been admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo, with injuries caused by the LTTE's suicide bomb attack carried out at around
10.30 am today at the junction of Dharmapala Mawatha and Sir Ernest de Silva Mawatha (Piththala Junction), Kollupitiya.

This attack targeting the vehicle, in which the Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Public Security, and Law & Order Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was traveling, is yet another instance of the LTTE's savagery and its cruel and inhuman policies against peace. It is noteworthy that the LTTE terrorists have carried out this attack targeting the Secretary Defence, who works with a commitment to the security of the country and the Sri Lankan nation, at a time when the Special Peace Envoy of Norway is in the country.

Through this bomb attack, the LTTE terrorists have even rejected the assurances given by President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his recent visit to India, to provide a peaceful political solution to the North East conflict. The International Community will no doubt understand that at a time when the President has extended his hand to peace, the LTTE has sought to respond to it through terrorism. In a way, this is a challenge directed not only to the people of this country who are committed to peace, but also to the
International Community.

What the terrorists of the LTTE seek to achieve through their savage and contemptible acts is to demonstrate to all people who value freedom, peace,
goodwill and democracy, its determination to achieve it aims by force or arms. This is because the LTTE leadership has realized their inability to achieve their personal ambitions and objectives through any means other than terrorism.

The Government wishes to emphasize that these acts of terror will not hinder it in its efforts to achieve peace by eliminating terrorism in the country; to enable all communities to live in peace and harmony.
