Govt. Stays Norway Special Envoy’s visit to Kilinochchi

The Government has stayed any visit by the Norwegian Special Envoy Hans Bauer to Kilinochchi until it concludes a review of relations with the LTTE in the present circumstances.

Mr. Bauer arrived in Sri Lanka last week for consultations with the Government and the LTTE on the Peace Process. He was due to travel to Kilinochchi today (Dec. 05) to meet the LTTE.

Secretary General of the Government’s Peace Secretariat, Dr. Palitha Kohona said that following the failed suicide bomb attack on the Defence Secretary
Gotabhaya Rajapaksa by the LTTE last Friday (Dec. 01), the Government had decided to review many aspects of the Peace Process and relations with the LTTE.

The PRIU understand that this review is necessitated by the LTTE’s repeated violations of the Ceasefire Agreement, including suicide bombs attacks, which culminated in the attack on the Defence Secretary; its avoidance of negotiations for peace and a political settlement; and the new policies of the LTTE following its leader’s latest “Heroes Day” speech on November 27, 06.

The Government is expected to announce many key decisions with regard to the LTTE after the Cabinet meets tomorrow (Dec. 06) where the latest developments vis-à-vis the LTTE will be discussed.
