President and Opposition Leader discuss implementing MoU

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Opposition Leader and leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickramasinghe met at Temple Trees today for discussions on taking forward the cooperation between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the UNP in keeping with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two parties. 

The discussions centered on the key item in the MoU - that of seeking a solution to the ethnic issue with aim of achieving sustainable peace in the country. Other items in the MoU were also discussed. 

The two delegations from the SLFP and UNP were led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe, respectively. 

It was decided that regular meeting will be held by the two groups beginning tomorrow (Dec. 06), and that the President will be kept informed of all decisions taken. Tomorrow's meeting will be held at the Parliamentary
Complex. 

The SLFP team at today's meeting was led by President Rajapaksa and comprised SLFP's Secretary General Minister Maithripala Sirisena and Ministers Mangala Samaraweera and Nimal Siripala de Silva.  

The UNP delegation led by Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe comprised MPs Karu Jayasuriya, Joseph Michael Perera and Rukman Senanayake.  

It was decided that at future meetings the SLFP team will be led by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, and the UNP team will be led by party leader Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe.
