Tiger attacks threaten GCE (O/L)

exam in East

[Monday, December 11, 2006 - 12.00 GMT]

Difficulties caused in sitting the GCE (O/L) examination due to continued LTTE attacks compelling people to seek shelter away from their homes in the Seruwila, is disrupting the conduct of the examination in these parts.

A group of displaced students and their parents protested in front of the Kantalai Agrabodhi National School demanding the re-scheduling of GCE (O/L)
exam, which commenced today, due to the problems caused by the LTTE attacks in their areas.

Due the LTTE attacks in Seruwila and surrounding areas in the last few days, displaced people now live in relief camps in Kantalai, causing difficulty for the students among these families to sit the examination. Among these IDPs there are 216 students who qualified to sit the above exam, said the Kantalai Divisional Secretary.

The IDPs has requested the Divisional Secretary to make arrangements enabling these students to sit the exam before next February, he further stated. The Education authorities are expected to take immediate steps to redress the concerns of these parents and students.
