Appointment of new Judges to Superior Courts

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed Court of Appeal President Justice Dhammika Jagath de Silva Balapatabendi as a Judge of the Supreme Court effective from 13 December, 2006. The Justice Puvalasiri Wijayaratne has been appointed as President of the Court of Appeal to fill the resultant vacancy in this Court.  

Justice Dhammika Jagath de Silva, who is elevated to Supreme Court today, was admitted to the Bar in 1973. He functioned as a State Counsel from 1975. On being appointed as a High Court Judge in 1995 he was promoted as a Judge of the Court of Appeal in 2001. 

The new President of the Court of Appeal Justice Puvalasiri Wijayaratne who was admitted to the Bar in 1968 joined the Judicial Service in 1976. On being promoted as a High Court Judge in 1991 he was promoted as a Judge of the Court of Appeal in 2002.
