Human rights are not limited to a particular race or group says President

Only people with a genuine love towards humanity have the right to talk about Human Rights said President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.

Speaking at a ceremony in Tangalle to mark International Human Rights Day which fell on the 10th of this month, the President said human rights were not limited to a particular race or group or area but was a right common to all.

“Children have a right to education, people have a right to gather in public places, to protest university students have a right to picket and voice their grievances”, stressed President Rajapaksa.

The President vowed that even though new laws were brought in to combat terrorism, he would never let them encroach on the human rights of the people.

President Rajapaksa said he had brought in international observers to monitor reports of human rights violations. He said the government was dedicated towards protecting the human rights of the people and said he considered it his personal responsibility to ensure these rights were protected.
