Plantation strike settled

The strike in the plantations that went on for the past 14 days will be called of following agreement reached today on the demands of the trade unions. 

The trade unions decided to call of the strike following the intervention of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and discussions with unions and the plantation management companies held at Temple Trees today, chaired by the President.  

At these discussions the trade unions that had initially asked for a daily wage of Rs. 300, had agreed to increase of the current daily wage from Rs. 190 to Rs. 260. Accordingly, the minimum wage in the plantation sector that was Rs. 135 will be raised to Rs. 170, and the incentive allowance will be raised from Rs.50 to Rs. 70. 

It is learnt that the 14-day strike in the plantation sector has cost the country Rs. 3 billion in losses. President Rajapaksa intervened to settle this strike due the loss to the national economy and the hardships it was causing the affected workers.
