75
more flee tigers into Govt. held area
[Friday,
January 12, 2007 - 8.30 GMT]
Seventy five persons from 31 families who
escaped the clutches of the LTTE in Vakarai came to Government
controlled areas in the East yesterday (January 11). They have fled the
LTTE held areas because of the harassment by LTTE cadres and fear for
their lives.
This brings the total number of persons who have fled the LTTE and moved
into the safety of Government controlled areas from November 1, 2006 to
date to 38,222.
The 75 persons who came to Government held area yesterday will be
temporarily sheltered in the Riditenne area, and later moved to
Vinayagampuram.
In addition 28 persons from the Kandampiddy areas of Mannar have also
moved into Government held area on January 10, said the Media Centre for
National Security (MCNS). They are now sheltered in the Pesalai area.
Those who fled LTTE control in the Mannar area have said they were
compelled to seek the safety of Government controlled areas because LTTE
cadres were
attempting to forcibly recruit their children to its armed ranks.
These escapees into Government held areas have said the LTTE was burying
land mines in many areas to prevent people from fleeing those areas, and
that it was using the public as human shields in many places from which
they were firing artillery and mortars to attack the security forces.
