proof of INGOs help to LTTE

STF finds LTTE
Cannabis plantation, too
The operations carried out by the Special
Task Force (STF) in the East leading to the fall of several key LTTE
camps in the Ampara and Kanchikudichchiaru areas have revealed a large
quantity of goods and material belonging to several well known
International Non-Government Organizations within these camps, that were
used by the LTTE.
The STF has also uncovered a very large cannabis plantation in a camp
held by the LTTE.
Among the material from INGOs found in the LTTE's Stanley Base and other
camps overrun by the STF are electricity generators, water pumps, tents,
water bowsers, said the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS).
At a media briefing held earlier today the MCNS revealed photographs of
a large quantity of equipment carrying the logos of well known INGOs,
including agencies that were found inside the LTTE camps.
The Media Spokesman for National Security, Minister Keheliya Rambukwelle
said much concern had been expressed from many quarters when several
months ago the Government said that NGOs and INGOs were having close
links with the LTTE. It was alleged then that the Government was trying
to impose restrictions on the NGOs. Now there was proof of such links
between the LTTE, NGOs and INGOs. The Government was now free of those
charges and
action was being taken under the direction of the Ministry of Defence to
work out a policy regarding the activities of INGOs and NGOs, the
Minister said.
Some of the INGOs that had provided assistance to the LTTE were those
which functioned with funds from the governments of countries that had
friendly relations with Sri Lanka, the Minister said. However, the
Government would not make any allegations against those countries, as
all their governments
did was to provide funds to these organizations, without regular
monitoring of their activities.
The Minister also said that more evidence was being found of the LTTE's
rackets in arms procurement and supply, abduction of persons and well as
dealing in illicit drugs. The STF had found a large cannabis plantation
in one of the areas now abandoned by the LTTE.
