SL Security Forces liberate Vakarai Town
[Friday, January 19, 2007 - 9.10 GMT]

Sri Lankan security forces claimed liberated Vakarai town in the eastern Batticaloa district earlier today.

The success at Vakarai ends a prolonged operation by the security forces to dislodge the LTTE from key positions in the East.

The LTTE terrorists had fled the Vakarai Town area unable to withstand the intrusive thrust of the armed forces. Following an hour long effort the SL army troops finally liberated the Vakarai town, and its hospital, which was used as an artillery launching pad by the terrorists, using civilians as human shields.

Media Spokesman for Defence, Minister Keheliya Rambukwelle confirmed the success of the armed forces as Vakarai. Military sources say ground troops are at present consolidating defences in the Vakarai town area.
