2271 Toppigala residents seek army protection

Civilians from Toppigala and surrounding areas in the Batticaloa district continue to fleeing to Siththandy area seeking army protection. 81 civilians belonging to 19 families fled the area seeking army protection, yesterday (January 29). They were families living in Pankunaveli, Illuppadichena and Kopaveli in Toppigala area. 

From 23rd this month to date the number of civilians who have fled seeking army protection due to Tiger terrorist activities has risen to 2271.  

The civilians of Toppigala area already displaced due to Tiger terrorist activities state they came seeking army protection because the Tigers engaged them in terrorist activities including building bunkers in LTTE camps.  

The civilians who came have been sheltered in IDP camps and provided with all necessary facilities by the security forces. Meanwhile, many of the civilians displaced from the Vakarai and Kantalai areas due to Tiger terrorist activities have been relocated in area free of landmine threats.
