Independence Day Messages
[Monday, February 05, 2007 - 6.00 GMT]

Below are messages of greeting received by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the occasion of 59th anniversary of Sri Lanka's Independence.

From the Secretary General, United Nations

His Excellency Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa
President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

Your Excellency,

It gives me great pleasure to extend to you and to the Government and people of Sri Lanka my warmest congratulations on the occasion of the National Holiday.

In our increasingly interdependent world, a trusted and responsive United Nations is needed now more than ever. A growing number of issues of worldwide concern require a cogent and coordinated international response. Our times demand a UN Secretariat that works effectively with the broader United Nations system, as well as with Member States, to address both
existing needs and emerging challenges.

I have no higher priority during my time in office that to realize this vision, and to maintain your confidence in the Organization's integrity, impartiality and ability to deliver.

As my colleagues and I pursue this mission, it is heartening to know has the United Nations can count on the guidance, commitment and support of the Government and people of Sri Lanka.

Pease accept, Your Excellency, the assurance of my highest consideration.

Ban Ki-moon,
Secretary-General of United Nations

From the President of France

Mr. President,

On the occasion of the National Day of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, I convey to you as well as to the Sri Lankan people, my warmest congratulations.

While fighting has resumed between the Army and the LTTE, and numerous civilians are suffering in a very difficult humanitarian situation, allow me to wish that dialogue will start again and that a political solution to the conflict that is tearing Sri Lanka apart will be found.

Sincerely yours,
Jacques Chirac

From the King of Sweden

His Excellency
Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa

On the occasion of the National Day of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka I extend to Your Excellency my sincere congratulations and my best
wishes for the prosperity of the people in a peaceful Sri Lanka."
