Number plate haul - terror suspicions
[Monday, February 05, 2007 - 10.30 GMT]

Police are investigating whether 91 vehicle number plates found with a group of persons at Trincomalee yesterday (February 4) were intended for terrorist
activities such as suicide bombings, abductions or hold-ups.

The Media Centre for National Security (MCNF) states that when the police conducted a sudden spot-check on the Colombo - Trincomalee train on 04th February, 2007 at around 05.45 PM, they found a group of 4 persons carrying 91 vehicle plates and medical equipment worth Rs. 30,000.00.

The large number of vehicle number plates aroused the suspicion of the Police Officers. While there could be a number of legitimate reasons to justify this number, the Police have not ruled out the possibility of even some of these being used for terrorist activities such as suicide attacks, hold-ups and abductions.

This group has been taken in for questioning. The number plates are in the process of been verified. According to the group detained, they had instructed by their employer to collect these items, for which they were to be paid per kilogram.

Investigations are under way by the Trincomalee Police with the assistance of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.
