[Monday, February 12, 2007 - 6.00 GMT]

The Navy attacked two Sea Tiger boats off the coast of Poduwakattu, Trincomalee in the early hours of today (12).

Having observed the movement of the suspicious boats around 4.30 a.m. Navy patrol craft with the assistance of a coastal naval unit confronted the Sea Tigers. One boat was destroyed and the other fell into Navy custody. Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said that the body of a dead Sea Tiger cadre and several weapons including a T-56 gun, an MPG weapon and a .50 type weapon were recovered from the captured boat. The boats were fitted with high powered engines, the MCNS added.

A search operation along the coastal stretch along Poduwakattu followed.
