Sri Lanka and Maldives: Cooperation in Education and Cultural Affairs

Two Memoranda of Understanding on Education and Cultural Cooperation have been signed between the Governments of Sri Lanka and the Maldives, during
the current visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Maldives. 

The Memoranda provides for the strengthening pf bilateral relations between the two countries in the field of education, recognizing the profound impact of education in human resources, economic and social development; and promoting cultural cooperation between the two countries on the basis of the mutual respect for their sovereignty and in conformity with the laws and regulations in force in each country. 

Below are the complete texts of the two Memoranda of Understanding: 

Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Government of the Republic of Maldives on cooperation in the field of Education 

-  To strengthen bilateral relations in the field of education

-  Recognizing the profound impact of education on human resources, economic and social developments

The activities may include all or some of the following :

*   Exchange of research materials, publications, educational literature, teaching aids, demonstration material and information.

*  Organization of joint conference, exhibitions and seminars

*  Organization of joint research programmes and publications

*  Organization of training programmes for educational administrators and teachers

*  Exchange of academic and other administrative staff

*  Exchange of scholars, teachers, experts and students

*  Twinning arrangements between institutions of higher learning

*  Setting up of educational/training institutions and to further develop bilateral programmes between institutions of educational excellence in technical, vocational and higher education

*  Possibility of mutual recognition of educational qualifications

*  Scholarships for further education in recognized institutions of higher learning

*  Mutual assistance in the fields of Information Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Science 

Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation between the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Government of the Republic of Maldives  

-  To promote cultural cooperation between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect for their sovereignty and in conformity with the laws and regulations in force in each country.

-  Exchange information on cultural life in their countries and international activities organized in both countries as well as encouraging the participation of their representatives in these events.

-  Facilitate cooperation between the national libraries and museums of both countries as well as encouraging the exchange of experts and publications in spheres of common interest

-  Promote cooperation in the field of opera, ballet, theatre and music as well as supporting the exchange of the performing troupes and artists on a reciprocal basis.

-  Develop diverse cooperation through the exchange of books, periodicals and other publications on culture and arts, as well as encouraging reciprocal participation in the international book fairs organized in the territory of the respective country in accordance with its legislation.

-  Support the exchange of exhibitions in the field of plastic art, Traditional and Folk Arts

-  Facilitate cooperation in the field of cinema and shall assist in the exchange of films and delegations, through film festivals to be organized in both countries.
