[Wednesday, February 14, 2007 - 10.10 GMT]

Defence spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told a media briefing today (14) the Presidential Commission headed by Justice Mahanama Tilakaratne has initiated investigations into complaints of abductions and disappearances in recent times.

The 16 member Group of Eminent Persons from the international community headed by Justice P.N. Bhagvati, former Chief Justice of India   that is overseeing the investigations had met on February 12-13 and decided to pursue three of the above complaints being investigated, the  Minister added.

Unlike the abductions and disappearances during the 1989 -90 period which were mainly concentrated in the south, the incidents this time were mostly confined to Mulativu and Kilinochchi districts in the Vanni which are under control of the LTTE. While both perpetrators and victims of abductions and disappearances during 1989 – 90 were from political parties and organizations, no such political allegiances are seen this time, the Minister explained.

Referring to the NGos and INGOs Minister Rambukwella said that unlike in the past the government has started a surveillance on them. Some of them are now more careful he said citing the case of Save the Children which had expressed concern over the use by the LTTE of their donations to government approved recipients.
