[Wednesday, February 14, 2007 - 10.30 GMT]

On February 13 at about 10.15 p.m. the security forces took into custody a large haul of explosives hidden in an abandoned house in Ariyalai, Jaffna, a statement from the Media Centre for National (MCNS) Security said.

Acting on a tip-off from a civilian an Army unit was able to recover 30 cases packed with 23kg of C-4 explosives each, a T-56 weapon with 2 magazines, 60 bullets, a satellite mobile phone and a NIC of a Tamil citizen, brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe, spokesman of the MCNS said. Had the LTTE been able to use these explosives stored perhaps before the closure of A-9 highway, it would have been a major calamity, he added. Search operations would continue the Brigadier added.
