Government to upgrade and enhance health infrastructure in North and East
[Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 8.30 GMT]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa told new batch of doctors receiving appointments last Tuesday (20) that the Government will soon upgrade and enhance healthcare infrastructure in the North and East. He called upon the Tamil speaking doctors to volunteer to work in the North and East as patients find it difficult to communicate with doctors who are not conversant in Tamil.

Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva addressing the doctors said that the government is conducting a special programme to train specialist doctors to overcome the shortage of consultants in hospitals. He expressed his satisfaction that the new batch of doctors included those who had training in anesthesia. The Minister also promised to provide medical officers wit living quarters.
