India ups surveillance
[Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 9.30 GMT]

Following the apprehension of a LTTE boat containing a large quantity of explosives by the Tamil Nadu Coast Guard on February 13, the Indian authorities have upped coastal and naval surveillance. Tamil Nadu Defence Minister A.K.  Antony on Sunday pledged to upgrade and enhance coastal surveillance infrastructure. Already 99 check points and 12 police posts have been already established along the Tamil Nadu coast. Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard destroyed the seized boat 20 nautical miles off the coast of Chennai on Tuesday.

In another development, the Tamil Nadu police yesterday (20) seized two tons of aluminium bars that were to be smuggled to northern Sri Lanka as raw material for LTTE weapons factories.

Minister Rambukwella citing these latest developments in Tamil Nadu welcomed them as a positive contribution that would help to block LTTE arms supplies through sea. There is growing awareness that the LTTE is not a liberation organization but a global terrorist outfit bent on creating mayhem to achieve its goals.
