Minister unhurt in LTTE mortar attack
[Tuesday, February 27, 2007 - 4.30 GMT]    

Minister of Human Rights and Disaster Management Mahinda Samarasinghe was unhurt following a mortar attack directed at the helicopter in which he arrived at Batticaloa this morning.

The LTTE fired mortars at the landing pad just as the helicopter carrying Minister Samarasinghe landed at Batticaloa town.

Several Western diplomats who accompanied the Minister on this visit including the Italian Ambassador and another Italian diplomat received minor injuries in the attack.

Military sources said that several civilians and two STF personnel were also injured and were rushed to hospital for medical attention.

The Minister and other visitors have been escorted to safety.
