Navy sinks suspicious ship
[Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 5.30 GMT]

The Sri Lankan Navy attacked and sunk a suspicious ship off the southern coast this morning.

According to the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) the Sri Lankan Navy had detected a ship off the Southern coast 180 nautical miles off Dondra around 8.30 a.m. As it was heading towards the Colombo harbour, the Navy had ordered it to identify itself. However, the identification provided differed from that of ships in the incoming list provided by the harbour authorities. The Navy thereafter ordered it to stop for verification but it had turned back and fled far away causing the Navy to attack it. It had sunk with a loud explosion, the MCNS further said.
