Construction of Hambantota Port to begin

The construction of the Hambantota Port will begin within the next three months. The first stage will commence in July 2007.This is a sequel to the successful discussions held by President Mahinda Rajapaksa with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Chinese Premier Wen Jia Bao during his current Chinese visit.

Eighty-five percent of the construction expenses will be borne by the Chinese Government. Premier Wen Jia Bao has agreed to release this money soon.

The discussions in Beijing with the two Chinese construction firms that will undertake the project have been successful. They are expected to sign the agreement with Sri Lanka on March 12. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Power and Energy Deputy Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera were also associated in the discussions with the Chinese construction firms.

The first stage of the project is expected to be completed within three years. Planning and other preliminary work has already been completed.
