Vakarai resettlement begins
[Tuesday, March 06, 2007 - 6.00 GMT]

Civilians who left Vakarai due to the military operations will be resettled in their original places of residence beginning from today (6), fulfilling a pledge given by President Mahinda Rajapaksa when he visited Vakarai after its liberation from the clutches of the LTTE.

16,000 families will be resettled in the first phase of the resettlement programme. Basic utilities such as electricity, water, health facilities and livelihood have been already restored according to plan. While the Vakarai Hospital functions normally a Police station has been opened to maintain law and order in the area. Facilities have already been provided for the fishermen to engage in their livelihood without a hindrance.
