[Thursday, March 08, 2007 - 12.10 GMT]

Government will soon launch a special program to implement its policy of helping local industry by improving the competitive ability of locally produced goods and the supply and service facilities for local industry.

The initial discussion on this program was held today (March 08) with the participation of the Secretaries to the Ministries of Finance, Industry, and Commerce and Trade, and other senior officials. The meeting was chaired by Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa.

The discussion focused on the need to introduce local goods of high quality to the Sri Lankan market to replace foreign goods imported at the cost of many millions annually. The need to carry out the manufacture of these goods ensuring the highest quality was emphasized.

The necessity for an effective program of work to strengthen the local milk producer, including the establishing of farms for milk production on large
government lands was also discussed.

The Finance Ministry has agreed to provide increase funds in the next budget and in the Ten Year Development Plan to strengthen the local industrialist,
as part of the overall national development strategy.
