LTTE’s last major base in Trincomalee district, Peraru, 30kms north of Trincomalee town fell today when the Security forces captured it after a 48 hour operation by ground troops assisted by Multi Barrel rocket Launchers and heavy artillery.

LTTE cadres who fled from Verugal, Vakarai and Kumburuppidy following successful operations by the Security Forces were holding the Peraru base.

According to military sources, while the total strength of the base was around 150, many would have got killed or wounded in the fighting.  The Army recovered many war like items and ammunition left behind by the fleeing LTTE cadres. A search operation is still in progress.

With the fall of the Peraru base the threat to road transport along Anuradhapura – Trincomalee and Trincomalee – Pulmudai roads has been eliminated.
