The number of internally displaced civilians from the Eastern province arriving in government-controlled areas seeking the protection of the security forces is increasing rapidly, said Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella at a press briefing this morning (14) in Colombo. The total number of persons who arrived so far is 87,711 he said.

There is much incorrect information in the media and the exact figures are given by the security forces who have taken a count of all such persons arriving in Government controlled areas, he added. Accordingly 52,447 persons have arrived from Thoppigala and 2,211 persons have arrived from Trincomalee, the Minister said.

Meanwhile 3, 844 displaced persons from Vakarai are being resettled in their original locations and 2, 803 persons from Trincomalee south have been resettled in Killiveddy.
