Govt to establish National Languages Studies and Training Institute
[Thursday, March 15, 2007 - 9.30 GMT]

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a Cabinet paper presented by Constitutional Affairs and National Integration Minister DEW Gunasekera to establish a National Languages Studies and Training Institute, said Cabinet spokesperson Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa at the weekly press briefing held today(15).

The objective of the Institute will be to train teachers, translators and interpreters competent in Sinhala, Tamil and English. The lack of such skills has prevented the effective implementation of the national language policy and has also affected the efficiency of the public service.

The Institute will be located in a building complex in a 10-acre plot of land at Dartonfield Estate, Agalawatta in the Kalutara district. It presently houses the National Plantation Management Institute.
