Navy sinks two LTTE arms ships
[Monday, March 19, 2007 - 5.00 GMT]

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) destroyed two ships without flags, carrying arms for the LTTE in the sea South East of Arugambay, on Sunday March 18,said a Naval spokesman yesterday.

A communique issued by the SLN said the vessels were detected by its Offshore Patrol Craft in the early hours on Sunday. The identifications given by the ships in response to messages from the SLN Patrol Craft were found to be false, it said. When the Navy fired warning shots the ships retaliated, the Communiqué further said.

Thereafter, the Navy fired on the ships following verification that they were carrying arms for the LTTE. Huge explosions took place when the ships sank confirming that they had arms and ammunition on board, the Navy added.

About a fortnight ago the SLN sank another ship carrying arms for the LTTE, off Dondra in the Southern coast.
