Defence Academy: Sir John better remembered

The Cabinet has granted its approval to a proposal by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as Minister of Defence, Public Security, Law and Order to change the name of the Kothalawala Defence Academy, Ratmalana to General Sir John Kothalawala Defence Academy.  

At its meeting on March 8, 2006 the Cabinet decided to amend the General Sir John Kothalawala Act No. 68 of 1981 accordingly. The amendment was referred
to the Legal Draftsman to make the necessary changes to the Act, for presentation to Parliament.  

The Attorney General has confirmed that the Draft Bill of Kothalawala Defence Academy amended by the Legal Draftsman is conformity to the provisions of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka.   

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who was the Chief Guest at the last convocation of the Kothalawala Defence Academy told its graduands and new graduates that
the name of the Academy would be changed as General Sir John Kothalawala Defence Academy, in respectful memory of the former Prime Minister who donated the property on which the Academy, specifically to establish a defence academy in Sri Lanka.
