Four civilians and two army personnel killed in suicide bomb attack

[Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 10.30 GMT]

Army prevented a major destruction when the LTTE using a tractor loaded with a large amount of explosives attempted to ram the main Army camp at Chenkaladi, Batticaloa district, Media Centre for National Security said.

This morning around 7.00 a tractor driven by a LTTE cadre, with a heavy load of explosives, had tried to enter the Chenkaladi Army camp. Seeing the unusually speeding tractor towards the camp, soldiers at the road block have fired at the tractor to stop it, a spokesperson for the MCNS said further.

The ensuing blast killed four civilians and two army personnel. Five civilians, two Army personnel and two police personnel were wounded by the incident.

The injured are currently under medical treatment at the Batticaloa hospital.
