Joint condemnation of LTTE air attack
[Tuesday,
March 27, 2007 - 3.30 GMT]
There was widespread condemnation of the LTTE's air attack on the
Katunayake Air Force Base by political parties from the Government and
Opposition in Sri Lanka.
In an unusual show of solidarity 13 political parties from the
Government and Opposition unequivocally condemned the LTTE's attack and
called in the people to support the Government moves to eliminate
separatist terror.
They also unaninmously called on the international community to take
note of the serious threat the LTTE's air power poses to the entire
South Asia region, and take action according to the real nature of this
threat.
The
statement was issued following a meeting of party leaders called by
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and held at Temple Trees last evening
(Monday 26).
Here is the full text of the statement:
Joint Statement March 26, 2007
We unequivocally condemn the LTTE's failed effort to weaken the strike
capability of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Similarly, we express our
gratitude and appreciation for the courageous action by the Sri Lanka
Air Force to foil the targets of the LTTE.
We unanimously call upon the Sri Lankan people to give their unstinted
support to all steps taken by the Government that uses this incident,
which gives the appearance of a grave threat to national security, as
the background to its efforts to completely and decisively defeat
separatist terrorism.
The air power of a frenzied and desperate organization as the LTTE is a
grave threat aimed not only to Sri Lanka but also to the entire South
Asian region. Accordingly, we call upon the international community to
make a proper assessment of this very real danger and draw its serious
attention to all actions taken both locally and abroad by these
separatist terrorist forces in Sri Lanka.
