Essential foodstuffs in plenty for New Year

The Government has initiated a programme to ensure that essential food items are available in plenty and at reasonable prices for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations.

When representatives of the Association of Importers of Essential Foodstuffs met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday, they were informed of the measures being taken by the Government in this regard.

The importers' representatives agreed to cooperate with the Government in maintaining stable prices for all essential food items and supply them to the consumer without any shortages during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period.

According to recent agreements reached between the Ministry of Trade and organizations of traders, they will maintain maximum stocks to ensure price stability of 10 essential food items during the period March 15 to April 30, 07.

The trade representatives assured the President of all cooperation in implementing the policies to help the consumer, without profit being their sole criterion.
