Political solution to National Question soon – President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa told United States Under Secretary of State Richard Boucher that a political solution to the National Question acceptable to all communities – Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim, would be presented soon, when they met in the sidelines of the 14th SAARC Summit in New Delhi today (04).

He also informed Boucher that the SLFP’s devolution proposals would be presented to the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) next week and finally a consensus solution will be put forward. The President also pledged to ensure that this solution would be acceptable to the majority of the population.

He also told the US Under Secretary that special attention is being paid to complaints of abductions and disappearances and the Presidential Commission continues to investigate them.

Under Secretary Boucher appreciated the remarks made by the President with reference to human rights during his address to the SAARC Summit and specially commended the President’s call for a joint anti-terrorist strategy for the region.

He also condemned the LTTE air attack on the Katunayake Air Base and promised to give maximum US support to Sri Lanka’s effort to achieve peace.

Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Foreign Secretary Dr. Palitha Kohona and Sri Lankan High Commissioner in New Delhi Romesh Jayasinghe also participated in t he discussion.
