President meets Bhutan, Pakistan Prime Ministers

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is in New Delhi for the 14th SAARC Summit met Prime Ministers of Bhutan and Pakistan at the Maurya Sheraton Hotel, New Delhi on April 03.

During the meeting with the Bhutanese Prime Minister Khandu Wangchuk, the President expressed his admiration for the Wild Life Conservation Programme of Bhutan and requested his assistance to implement a similar programme in Sri Lanka. The two leaders agreed on the need for a united stand in dealing with instances when Buddhism is defamed worldwide.

President Rajapaksa informed the Bhutanese Prime Minister that he would explore possibilities of providing concessionary airfares through Mihin Air for pilgrimages between the two countries.

The Bhutanese Prime Minister thanked the President for training Bhutanese doctors and other officials in Sri Lanka.

The President also held cordial talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Azeez. Matters discussed included increasing of the number of flights between Lahore and Colombo, increasing the number of pilgrimages between the two countries and the exploration of ways and means to re-direct tourist traffic from South East Asian countries to Pakistan via Colombo. It was also decided to increase the number of scholarships granted by Pakistan to Sri Lanka.
