India will fully support efforts to defeat terrorism in Sri Lanka said Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh when he met President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (04) at Vigayan Bhavan, New Delhi.

President Rajapaksa told dr. Singh that the LTTE has violated the Ceasefire Agreement numerous times and has used it to amass arms. He also informed the Indian leader about the humanitarian mission conducted by the Government to liberate the people of the Eastern province from the clutches of the LTTE. The Government is taking urgent steps to resettle the people displaced due to the recent conflict in their original settlements and improve their livelihood, assured the President.

Speaking on the human rights situation the President told Dr. Singh that a Presidential Commission is investigating complaints of human rights violations and international observers have been given the opportunity to observe the working of the Commission.

Dr. Manmohan Singh agreed that the Sri Lanka Navy was not responsible for the killing of a group of Indian fishermen recently. He agreed to initiate a programme together with the Sri Lankan government, for the safety of the South Indian fishermen.
