[Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 11.00 GMT]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed that construction work on the proposed international airport at Weerawila be expedited and that action be taken to speed up the payment of compensation to those whose lands have been acquired for this project.

These instructions were given at a Progress Review meeting on the Weerawila Airport Construction held at Temple Trees yesterday (09).

Accordingly, arrangements will be made to pay compensation in the next few months to those whose homes and lands were acquired for this project. Work
on construction of the model village at Kajuwatte in Weerawila will also be expedited.

It has also been decided to develop the Ranminitenne area to provide alternate land to those whose lands have been acquired for this project, and also to establish a special extension office to carry on the proposed allocation of land on the left bank of the Walawe for others who are to be re-settled.

The work on the Weerawila Airport construction is targeted to be completed to enable the first aircraft to land there in 2011.
