Human rights: Presidential Commission proceeding smoothly

[Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 10.20 GMT]

The Presidential Commission investigating alleged human rights violations including alleged abductions and disappearances is proceeding with its work smoothly, said government Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella at a press briefing held this morning (18) at the Gramodaya Centre, Colombo.

Already the Commission has started investigating into more than 15 complaints and a special unit has been set up to maintain secrecy and give maximum security to witnesses, he added.

A Ministerial Committee has also been appointed to look into reports concerning actions of diplomatic personnel that infringe on the sovereignty of the country while they are perusing on their own alleged human rights violations.
