Jaffna gets essential commodities cheap for New Year

[Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 10.25 GMT]

During the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival season the government was able to provide adequate stocks of essential commodities to the Jaffna residents at affordable prices, said Government Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella during a press briefing in Colombo today (18). In fact, they were cheaper than in Colombo, the Minister added.

According to the Minister the government was also able to ensure proper and quick distribution of these goods since the cooperative society distribution network was augmented by more private traders who resumed their businesses despite intimidation by the LTTE.

A total of 6300 metric tons of essential goods were dispatched to Jaffna for the festive season. Altogether 96,000 metric tons have been dispatched there since August 2006.
