[Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - 5.30 GMT]

Security forces foiled an attempt by a Tiger light aircraft to penetrate the Palaly High Security Zone around 1.15 a.m. today (24). The aircraft was forced to flee without accomplishing its mission as it met heavy anti-aircraft fire. On its way back the aircraft had dropped two “explosive devices” in the Myladdy beach. No casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, Tigers had fired artillery from the Pooneryn are but were retaliated with artillery fire by the security forces. Five soldiers who were injured in the confrontation later succumbed to their injuries, said the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS).

The MCNS also reported an LTTE claymore attack on a civilian passenger bus near the 33 km post on Mannar – Medawachchiya Road in the Menik Farm area around 11.30 p.m. on Monday (3). Thirty-five passengers including seven children were injured while three civilians had died instantly due to the attack. Two of the injured had succumbed to their injuries on admission to hospital.
