Canada investigates LTTE fundraising

[Monday, April 30, 2007 - 5.00 GMT]

Canadian authorities are continuing investigations into alleged fundraising activities of the LTTE in Canada. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which seized a large amount of documents and other material from the offices of the World Tamil Movement (WTM) in July 2006, sought and received from Court further time (one year) to examine them. On April 24 the RCMP told court that 796 documents have been found to contain evidence of fundraising for the LTTE by the WTM.

In an unrelated probe last August, the RCMP and FBI arrested several Canadians and Americans for allegedly trying to buy missiles for the Tigers. Among those charged were former University of Waterloo students and a former communications director for the Canadian Tamil Congress.

The LTTE was added to the Canada’s list of proscribed terrorist organizations on April 8, 2006.
