Killing of Indian fishermen: Indian Police confirm LTTE responsibility

[Monday, April 30, 2007 - 5.50 GMT]

Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee in a press release issued a few days ago stated that five Indian fishermen were killed by the LTTE in Indian territorial waters on March 29. According to Mukherjee this was revealed by the Sea Tiger suspects in Indian custody when they were interrogated by the Police.

The Indian authorities are also engaged in efforts to secure the release of 12 fishermen abducted  by the Sea Tigers.

This confirms the statement issued by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as early as March 11 that “the LTTE has been engaged in the practice of attacking Indian fishing trawlers with the sole aim of discrediting the Sri Lanka Navy”. The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry has repeatedly assured the Indian authorities that “the Sri Lanka Navy would not under any circumstances infringe into Indian territorial waters by crossing the IMBL”.

Sri Lanka has already proposed that India and Sri Lanka conduct Joint Patrols to thwart terrorism and piracy in these waters, particularly with regard to LTTE activity.
