[Thursday, May 17, 2007 - 7.00 GMT]

A trawler suspected of carrying arms and ammunition for the LTTE has been sunk in the Maldivian territorial waters, Maldivian information sources revealed.

The Maldivian Coastguard had observed this craft yesterday (16) night and ordered it to stop for inspection. The craft had failed to obey the order causing the Coastguard to fire warning shots. When the craft returned fire the Coastguard had fired at it causing it to sink.

Five persons who were in the craft have been arrested and when interrogated they have claimed to be members of the LTTE, the same sources added.
