[Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 6.00 GMT]

The ICRC withdrew from its positions in the Omanthai entry/exit point following an incident in which the LTTE fired upon a civilian van trying to proceed towards government controlled territory around 4 p.m. yesterday (22), said a media release issued by the Media Centre for National security (MCNS).

The ICRC hut is situated in the no man’s land between the Security Forces and the LTTE road blocks in Omanthai, Vavuniya along the A-9 Kandy - Jaffna main road. Rounds from the LTTE fire targeting the civil van had fallen in the vicinity of the ICRC compound threatening the safety of ICRC representatives. The Omanthai roadblock was re-opened only the day before (21) following written security guarantees by the Security Forces and the LTTE to the ICRC.

The Omanthai entry/exit point is temporarily closed due the withdrawal of the ICRC, the MCNS added.
