Sea battle off Delft

[Thursday, May 24, 2007 - 6.05 GMT]

A sea battle between the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and the LTTE is taking place off Delft island, a spokesman of the SLN said this morning. Fighting had started around 1.30 a.m. today (24) when the Sea Tigers arrived in 15 boats and attacked the Navy.

In the resulting confrontation the SLN had sunk one boat believed to be on a suicide mission and some others have fled towards the Jaffna mainland. The Sri Lanka Air Force was also summoned to assist the SLN.

Two Navy personnel were injured and seven were missing in action. The situation is under control and the Navy has started search operations in the Delft island, the naval spokesman added.
