Death toll rises to 8 in LTTE Claymore attack
[Tuesday, May 29, 2007 - 5.00 GMT]

Death toll rose to 8 as two persons succumbed to their injuries from the LTTE claymore attack on a Special Task Force (STF) truck at Ratmalana around 5.45 p.m. yesterday (28) which instantly killed 6 and injured 37 including STF personnel. The injured were rushed to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, Panadura District Hospital and the National Hospital, Colombo.

The bomb is suspected to have been fixed to the roof of a closed down shop located on the seaside of the Galle road, near the Belekkade Junction. Several shops close by, including a VCD centre were damaged in the explosion suspected to have been activated by a remote controlled device.

The Police, STF, Army and the Air Force carried out a joint search operation in the area soon afterwards.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa condemned the attack and expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims. In a press release issued yesterday, the President said "At a time when the Government Forces are engaged in a humanitarian mission to liberate the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims from the grip of LTTE terrorism, attacks like these can be termed as desperate attempts to instigate communal clashes."  Police are conducting further investigations.
