Foreign Minister seeks Iranian investments

Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama met Iranian Finance Minister Davood Danesh Jafari at the Ministry of Finance & Economy in Tehran on May 26, 2007,said a press release issued by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Teheran. The Minister was accompanied by Minister of Petroleum A.H.M. Fowzie.

The Foreign Minister briefed the Iranian Minister of the investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka to the investors of Iran and sought the assistance of the Government of Iran to enhance the trade and investment from the Islamic Republic of Iran particularly in the areas of agriculture, energy, technology, industry, construction and infrastructure development.

Minister Bogollagama requested the Iranian Finance Minister to consider granting line of credit for several projects related to the development of highways and construction of bridges and highways. The Iranian Finance Minister confirmed that the Government of Iran is seriously considering the proposals made by the Government of Sri Lanka.

Foreign Minister thanked the Iranian Minister for the cooperation and the financial assistance extended by Iran particularly by the Iranian Ministry of Finance and Economy for the several development projects in Sri Lanka and also brought to the notice of the Iranian Minister that the Ceylon Shipping Corporation has already made a proposal to purchase 02 ships from Iran at the estimated cost of US$ 15-20 million and that the Government expects the credit facility for this purchase as well.

The Foreign Minister also proposed a joint investment seminar to be held in Tehran in September/October 2007 to encourage state and private sector investments in Sri Lanka. The Iranian Finance Minister responded that the trade and investment has now been private sector coordination and that their Ministry would extend every possible assistance for private sector cooperation between Sri Lanka and Iran in the field of trade and investment.

Foreign Minister conveyed the Iranian Minister that he is carrying a personal message from, President Mahinda Rajapakse to Iranian President Dr. Ahmadinejad and that he would be handing it over during his meeting with the Iranian President on Monday, 28th May 2007.

The Minister will also be inaugurating the Sri Lanka-Iran Business Council and inaugurate the website of the Mission yesterday (27th May 2007). The Foreign Minister is also scheduled to meet the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament to and Minister of Commerce and Minister of Petroleum of Iran during the visit.
