Hambantota Port construction begins
[Wednesday, June 06, 2007 - 8.45 GMT]

Construction work of the Hambantota Port will commence tomorrow at Mirijjawila.

The port equipped with modern facilities is a major project coming under the National Infrastructure Development Programme. Financial assistance for the Project is supplied by the People’s Republic of China. This is a sequel to the successful discussions held by President Mahinda Rajapaksa with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Chinese Premier Wen Jia Bao during his current Chinese visit.

The agreement between the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and the Chinese Consortium for the development of the Hambantota Port was signed on march 12, 2007 according to which China would provide US $ 450 million.
