We will not betray the achievements of our war heroes who are second to none as they had to face challenges not faced by any other army in the world, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the ceremony dedicated to the memory of the war heroes at the War Heroes’ memorial, Mailapitiya, Kandy yesterday (7) evening.

This ceremony was the culmination of a Month of Remembrance of War Heroes that began on May 7 on the initiative of the President. Family members of the war heroes, provincial and national political leaders, three Service Chiefs and the IGP and other high-ranking members of the security forces and the Police were among the large number of participants at the ceremony.

Speaking further the President said that the Government will uninterruptedly continue the fight against terrorism while being ever ready to participate in peace talks. We will build a country where all communities could live in amity and freedom, he added. “We will also restore to the people in the North their right to live freely as we have granted to those in the East,” he said.
